How does the Switzerland gross to net salary calculator work?

The calculator shows an estimated breakdown of a CHF salary into net pay, employee contributions, and income tax. In Switzerland, the result depends on the canton, family situation, age, children, church tax, and insurance rates set at the workplace.

The income tax result is marked as a canton-based estimate. An exact calculation requires cantonal and municipal data and the correct tax tables.

Contributions AHV/IV/EO, ALV, NBU i BVG

In the Swiss payroll system, an employee salary may be reduced by AHV/IV/EO, ALV, NBU and BVG contributions. The final amount depends on employment status, age, contract terms, insurer, and pension plan.

Item Meaning in the calculator
AHV/IV/EOBasic employee social insurance.
ALVUnemployment insurance.
NBUNon-occupational accident insurance, often dependent on the employer.
BVGOccupational pension pillar, dependent among other things on age and the pension plan.

Canton-based tax

Income tax in Switzerland depends on the canton and usually also on the municipality. That is why the calculator includes all 26 cantons, but the exact amount requires the correct tables and local data.

When working with tax withheld at source, marital status, number of children, and church tax may also matter. For a reliable result, compare the calculation with the ESTV calculator or a cantonal tax tool.

If tax at source (Quellensteuer) was withheld too high, you may be able to recover part of the amount after the end of the year. We handle this through our Swiss tax refund service.
