How a tax refund from Austria works

Austria uses a progressive tax tariff, where tax increases with income. During the year, the employer withholds income tax advances that do not always correspond to the tax actually due. Only the annual settlement submitted to Finanzamt Österreich makes it possible to recalculate income, take allowances into account and refund the overpayment on the basis of the complete yearly situation.

Overpayments occur particularly often with employment during part of the year, seasonal work, a change of employer or unused allowances.

How much tax from Austria can be refunded

The amount depends on income, advances paid and available tax allowances. In many cases, the average refund is 1500 to 2500 EUR, but every tax situation is calculated individually on the basis of the documents, the employment period in Austria and the allowances that can be applied.

Which documents are needed for the settlement

The most important document is the Lohnzettel (L16), the annual tax certificate issued by the employer. It contains information about earnings and income tax paid. In some cases, settlement is possible on the basis of monthly payslips, but the annual Lohnzettel is best because it summarises the full year and is the standard basis for the calculation.

If you are missing a document, we explain how to obtain it quickly.
