How does the Austrian tax refund calculator work?
The Austrian tax refund calculator lets you send the details needed for an estimate in 4 steps. After you complete the form, our specialists review your tax situation and prepare a free estimate of your refund from the Austrian Finanzamt within 24 hours.
The calculator is free and does not commit you to anything. After you receive the estimate, you decide whether you want us to handle your Austrian tax return.
What should you prepare before completing the calculator?
To estimate an Austrian tax refund, you need documents confirming employment and the income tax paid (Lohnsteuer):
- Lohnzettel (Jahreslohnzettel L16) - the Austrian annual statement from your employer, showing gross earnings and tax withheld. The employer must issue it by the end of February for the previous year
- Payslip (Gehaltszettel) - if you do not have your Lohnzettel yet, the last payslip from that year is enough
- Information about income in Poland - if you earned income in Poland or other EU countries in the same year
Which allowances does the Austrian tax refund calculator include?
The Austrian tax system offers allowances that can significantly increase the refund amount, especially for employees commuting from Poland:
- Pendlerpauschale - a deduction for commuting costs to the workplace. For employees commuting from Poland to Austria, amounts can range from several hundred to over 3,000 EUR per year, depending on the distance and availability of public transport
- Accommodation costs (doppelte Haushaltsfuhrung) - if you maintain accommodation in Austria and a home in Poland at the same time, you may be able to deduct rent as a double household cost
- Familienbonus Plus - a child tax credit for children up to 18 years of age, up to 2,000 EUR per year per child. Requirement: receiving family allowance (Familienbeihilfe) in Austria for at least 7 months
- Alleinverdienerabsetzbetrag - a sole earner allowance if the spouse earns below the set threshold
For which years can you calculate an Austrian tax refund?
An Austrian tax return (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung) can be filed up to 5 years back. Even if you have never filed a tax return in Austria, you may be able to recover overpaid tax for previous years. In the calculator, you can select:
- Austrian tax refund calculator for 2025
- Austrian tax refund calculator for 2024
- Austrian tax refund calculator for 2023
- Austrian tax refund calculator for 2022
- Austrian tax refund calculator for 2021
What happens after you send the calculation?
After you submit the form, our team reviews the documents and prepares an estimate. If you decide to proceed with the tax return, we handle the whole process - from preparing the tax declaration (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung), through electronic submission to the Austrian Finanzamt via FinanzOnline, to translating correspondence from the office. The usual waiting time for a refund from the Finanzamt is 2-4 months from filing the declaration.
The service is billed at a fixed fee, with no commission on the refund amount - the entire recovered tax goes to you. Details are available on the pricing page.
